Looking after the Environment
AIMING FOR A GREENER FUTURE…
At white cottage we understand how important it is to look after the environment.

Without human activity our planet would look after itself. The problem is that everything we do has some impact on the environment. That’s why we’re always looking into the best ways to keep the production of our greenhouses as green as possible. This includes using environmentally friendly timber for the great majority of each greenhouse, and aiming to minimise waste wherever possible, which is also cost effective for us and our customers. |

TIMBER
As much of our greenhouses as possible is constructed using Western Red Cedar (Thuja Plicata), sourced from sustainable managed Canadian forests. Using this timber is good for the environment, as the carbon stored inside it (which the tree removed from the atmosphere while it was growing) is locked away as part of a beautiful, long lasting structure, and not released back into the atmosphere. And of course another tree is planted in its place, which will repeat the cycle, taking more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it grows.
ALUMINIUM
We keep the necessary use of Aluminium in the roof of our greenhouses to a minimum, as one of the drawbacks of an Aluminium greenhouse is the high cost of production on the environment. This is due to the large amounts of electricity consumed in processing bauxite, the cost of replacing material parts used up in the process, damage to landscape from mining and air pollution, and the disposal of waste products.
While we feel that using some Aluminium roof components to increase the longevity of our greenhouses is a necessary design improvement, using painted timber for the side frames gives greater character and a more tactile finish, and also results in an intrinsically greener product.
