Heritage glasshouse reinstatement

TRADITIONAL GREENhouses with Modern Performance

Our Victorian specification provides the perfect platform to reproduce the grander glasshouses of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Many of these original buildings, if they still survive at all, are by now dilapidated beyond repair, making restoration unviable. Replacing the greenhouse with a modern structure opens the door to using more modern materials which have greater longevity and are easier to maintain, keeping mid to long term maintenance costs both predictable and attainable.

Retaining the authenticity of the original building is ever more paramount, however, in settings that will almost certainly fall within listed building curtilage and conservation restrictions. Heritage consultant committees will demand as many original features be maintained or recreated as possible and will want to make sure any glasshouse reinstatement adds to the significance of a listed property rather than detracts.

Our use of timber for the main framework sets us apart from other greenhouse manufacturers with the capabilities to design and manufacture at this level. There is no compromise between our painted Accoya framework and the original timber that we will be replacing, whilst the benefits of a 50-year guarantee plus anticipated lifespan of over 70 years requires no further interrogation.

Our design handwriting borrows faithfully the proportions, profiles, and geometry of original Victorian buildings, ensuring our greenhouses look and feel just right. As if they have always been there. But one-piece glass and a solid aluminium roof eliminate the inevitable demise that a timber roof will submit to and give gardening teams confidence their vital growing spaces won’t be cordoned off, declared unsafe, and maintenance managers can redirect associated maintenance budgets.

    Planning Application Support

We’re able to assist with detailed drawings to bolster LBC and planning applications, provide the necessary support to project teams trying to balance the benefits of new materials and a new structure against a restoration attempt, and incorporate salvaged original features into the new greenhouse where that’s possible and it makes sense to do so.

The Best of Both Worlds

We use a combination of Accoya® wood and aluminium extrusions to produce unique greenhouses that combine the authenticity and ambience of classic period timber structures with low maintenance and craftsmanship that will last a generation.
