Bespoke Victorian
During Victorian times ornate architecture was fashionable and, when glass tax was abolished in 1845, greenhouses became popular amongst the wealthy upper class who competed to build the most impressive structures. Our ‘Victorian’ specification provides the platform to reproduce these grand old buildings accurately; a really authentic look for those with a discerning eye for detail.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature associated with greenhouses of the period is the classic portal framed structure. Typical Victorian glasshouses used large rafters and mullions at regular intervals, often tied and strengthened with ironwork, to support the rest of structure. These modular sections were subdivided into four or so individual bays.
Horizontal purlins strung between the rafters would carry the much narrower and more delicate glazing bars. The framework of our Victorian greenhouses is manufactured from our largest and most detailed timber sections with additional moulding used on the glazing bars, rafters and architrave.
Other distinguishing details are the multi-bay roof vents and large opening sashes in the sides. Individual glazing centres are kept narrow for a truly Victorian look with decorative cast aluminium spandrel brackets fitted at the eaves and ridge.
Because of its construction our Victorian specification is naturally suited to wider span greenhouses and when a strong visual impact is important.
